Ginger Reduces Colon Inflammation
Ginger supplements reduced markers of colon inflammation in a small group of people, suggesting that the supplement may help prevent colon cancer.
Thirty healthy volunteers were randomly assigned to take two grams of ginger root supplements or a placebo for 28 days.
Researchers then measured signs of colon inflammation and found significant reductions in most markers, and trends toward reductions in others. Inflammation has been implicated in prior studies as a precursor to colon cancer. Lead researcher Suzanna M. Zick, ND, MPH, said an additional trial is needed to see how ginger root affects that risk.
The results were published in Cancer Prevention Research, a journal of the American Association for Cancer Research.
